We represent the construction industry in Connecticut.

Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut is a trade association representing Merit Shop contractors and builders. Merit Shop Contractors account for over 80% of the construction industry in Connecticut and 86% of the industry nationwide. As a Chapter of ABC National, our 200 members are afforded an effective voice in the political system.

Merit Shop is the belief in free enterprise on the jobsite. Merit Shop is the belief that all construction contracts should be awarded to the lowest responsible qualified bidder based on merit, regardless of the company's non-union or union affiliation.

We are a voluntary membership organization working to support the construction industry in Connecticut and in the United States of America.

Our membership is diverse; ranging from some of the largest and most established firms in Connecticut to new firms who have just entered the commercial and public market.

Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut was chartered in 1976 as a Chapter of the national Associated Builders and Contractors. Founded in 1972 as a part of the Yankee Chapter of ABC, the Connecticut Chapter began with 112 members.

Mission Statement

ABC Connecticut is the recognized advocate and defender of merit shop contractors and addresses the unique challenges of our members.

Vision Statement

ABC Connecticut is the premiere resource for construction.

2007 Review
  • PROJECT LABOR AGREEMENT PREVENTION - CT ABC continued its battle against discriminatory contracts that eliminate open shop workers. Efforts this year included; 2 billboards, over 100 radio ads, full page newspaper ads and many owner and public official meetings.
  • 'GO TO' LEGISLATIVE LOBBYING TEAM - Hartford produced 4,000 bills this year! We killed anti-business bills including the expansion of prevailing wage to private jobs, false claims and many pro-union bills such as universal health care, captive audience (would prevent employer/employee meetings to discuss the cons of going union) and a mining tax bill that would have imposed a sand and gravel tax. In addition to our Lobbyist, Halloran & Sage, we hired Innovate & Organize who will spearhead our grassroots efforts. This will be the break out member service of 2008!
  • FOUNDED PRIVATE OCCUPATIONAL SCHOOL - CT ABC and Members continued to invest in the future by opening the Construction Education Center, a private school providing apprenticeship, craft, OSHA and career development classes. Years in the making, this is a significant milestone!
  • CONNECTICUT CONSTRUCTION COALITION - CT ABC helped form an industry coalition of associations to increase the industries’ effectiveness against anti-business legislation.
  • KILLED CARD CHECK - National ABC, Chapters and Members worked together to defeat a bill that would’ve enabled unions to solicit signature cards one by one, not in the privacy of a voting booth.
  • STRONG STAFF & DEDICATED BOARD - Our team is always ready to assist members! Lelah Campo (President), Patricia Torres-Lewis (Education Director), Suzanne O’Brien (Executive Assistant), Tina King (Member Services Director), and Elizabeth Telles (Bookkeeper). The Board of Directors is an energetic, well qualified representation of our members. They are dedicated to working with staff and committees to improve our industry.
  • NEW SEMINARS - We provided a whole new line of professional development seminars ranging from negotiations skills to project management and estimating academies. More to come in ‘08!
  • NO COST EVENTS - In an unheard of association move, CT ABC provided 9 free Member events - everything from breakfast seminars to networking nights. More free events to come in 2008!
  • MEDIA APPEARANCES - As the voice of the open shop contractor, we speak for our industry on TV, radio and in print. We pride ourselves on presenting your viewpoint passionately, professionally and factually.
